About Paul

Paul van der Merwe is an experienced property valuation professional with expertise across residential, commercial and specialised property assets throughout Western Australia. A Certified Practising Valuer, Licensed Valuer in Western Australia and member of both the Australian Property Institute and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Paul provides independent, thoroughly researched and reliable valuation advice across a broad range of valuation and advisory matters.

His professional background spans property valuation, accounting and finance, giving him a well-rounded understanding of both property markets and the commercial drivers underpinning asset performance and investment decision-making.

Paul has extensive experience undertaking valuations for mortgage security, taxation, retrospective valuation, insurance replacement and strategic advisory purposes across residential, rural lifestyle, commercial, industrial, retail, office and medical asset classes. He also provides expert valuation advice relating to englobo land subdivision and feasibility analysis.

An experienced Expert Witness, Paul regularly assists in matters involving Supreme and Family Court proceedings throughout Western Australia and possesses a strong understanding of Family Law and Expert Evidence rules, protocols and procedural requirements. In addition to court-appointed matters, he also advises clients in mediation settings and in a shadow expert capacity, where his balanced and analytical approach is highly regarded.

Prior to entering the valuation profession, Paul worked in accounting and finance roles within the education and not-for-profit sectors, experience which continues to support his understanding of broader asset classes and complex commercial property matters. His valuation career has included positions with a number of respected national valuation firms including MVS National Valuers, Acumentis, Herron Todd White and WBP Group, where he undertook extensive residential valuation work across both Perth and Melbourne metropolitan markets.

Alongside his professional practice, Paul remains actively involved in governance and community leadership roles. He currently serves as Chairperson of The Uniting Church in Australia Property Trust WA and is a member of The Uniting Church in the City Property and Finance Committee, contributing his expertise in property, finance and governance matters.

Known for his professionalism, technical capability and considered approach to valuation and advisory work, Paul is respected for delivering practical and well-supported property advice tailored to complex client and legal requirements.
